Qld:Local knowledge should rule: EMQ boss

The Queensland Floods Inquiry has heard that Brisbane-based emergency service bosses
wanted to send 60 SES volunteers to a flooded town of only 40 houses.

Emergency Management Queensland (EMQ) southwest regional director ROBERT BUNDY told
the commission today that some puzzling decisions were made by the state disaster coordinations
centre during the floods.

It wanted to send 60 SES volunteers to Condamine .. the town of 40 houses that had
no water, sewerage, food or road access.

But Mr BUNDY told the inquiry that people don't want to see an invasion of help ..

and power must remain in local hands when disasters strike.

He spoke to the inquiry after premier ANNA BLIGH this week sent an email to every public
servant assuring them they could speak openly to the inquiry.

The inquiry .. siting in Toowoomba .. continues.

StumbleUpon, a discovery engine, announced the latest in a series of planned enhancements to its "no-click" ad system, allowing brand advertisers and publishers to automatically target their campaigns to audiences most likely to engage with and share their branded content with others.

According to a release, the new auto-targeting feature uses StumbleUpon's content recommendation technology to enable advertisers to optimize the reach and relevance of their web marketing efforts. The enhancement also aims to reduce their administrative overhead and improve their return on investment.
"Auto-targeting affords advertisers the option to more intelligently cast a wider net in the StumbleUpon ecosystem with virtually no effort," said Marc Leibowitz, StumbleUpon's VP of Partnerships, Sales and Marketing. "Advertisers can now create successful viral marketing campaigns that reach only potential customers whose interests directly align with specific types of branded content."

"We'll be introducing a series of ad features and functionality over the coming months that take advantage of StumbleUpon's technology," said Jeff Eddings, a Senior Product Manager at StumbleUpon. FED: Two-up and football for Aussie troops in Afghanistan

By Crystal Ja

CANBERRA, April 23 AAP - Australian troops in Afghanistan will turn out on Anzac Day
for a traditional dawn service, joined as usual by a heavy contingent of Afghan soldiers
and locals.

At various patrol bases, there will be special breakfasts, football matches and the
old Australian betting game of two-up, although the latter might be a tad difficult to
explain to the locals.

But Afghans understand well the importance of Anzac Day itself, said Lieutenant Colonel
Jason Blain, who commands the Mentoring Task Force One (MTF-1) based at Tarin Kowt.

He said Afghan soldiers were proud to share the day with the Australians.

"The Afghans themselves are quite cognisant of remembering fallen soldiers, given they've
a long history of sacrifice themselves," he told AAP.

"They definitely are attuned to what it's about.

"They have a similar thing in their country, but nothing that really has the same sort
of emotional connection."

The dawn service, which will be held at Tarin Kowt's Camp Holland, will draw about
1000 people, including Dutch and US soldiers.

Lt Col Blain said Anzac Day hadn't lost any significance for troops serving overseas,
saying it was an opportunity to pause and reflect amid the day-to-day grind.

"It does bring home the legacy of the Anzac spirit and their role in maintaining that
spirit, and being the current generation.

"It's a special moment for us."

Army chief Ken Gillespie, who visited troops in Afghanistan ahead of Anzac Day, said
it's another powerful reminder that what they're doing there is worthwhile.

"Hopefully at the end of that is another country and another group of people that can
start to enjoy the freedoms that we do," he told AAP.

He also believes recognition of past sacrifices continues to grow.

"Activities like Fromelles and the findings of all those bodies in the mass grave and
what's going on there have rekindled a lot of interest.

"Younger generations are coming along, and people are actually reading military history.

"It's not like talking about ancient Roman times when people didn't have a direct family
link to it.

"The first and second world wars were somebody's great-grandfather, great- uncle, brothers,
husbands.

"It's living history."

Lieutenant General Gillespie will make his first Anzac trip to Villers-Bretonneux on
Sunday, something he's been looking forward to for most of his military career because
of his own family connection.

"I'll be looking for my great-uncle, whose name appears on one of the walls there,"

Lt Gen Gillespie said.

"He ended up going to France and not lasting very long ... he was one of those that
was killed on probably his first day in battle.

"We don't really know where he lies, but his name is there on the wall, so yeah, it'll
be something for me to go and see it."

Fed: Aussies are quitting smoking, but still love their food and drink

Australians might be butting out their cigarettes .. but new statistics reveal they
still love to eat and drink dangerously.

The latest snapshot from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows fewer people now
smoke and more young people are kicking the habit .. with 23 per cent of 18-24 year-olds
still smoking .. compared with 36 per cent in 1990.

But the data shows binge drinking is a major problem .. with one in seven men and one
in nine women boozing dangerously while the overall level of risky drinking hasn't fallen
in three years.

The country's other great vice .. food .. led to 37 per cent of all Australian adults
being classified as overweight in 2007-08 .. and another quarter obese.

And it's not just adults who are eating too much the statistics show a quarter of all
children aged between five and 17 were overweight or obese in 2007-08 .. that's up four
percentage points from 1995 levels.

NSW: Survivor of Epping house massacre says thanks to supporters

SYDNEY, Aug 2 AAP - The sole survivor of a family brutally murdered in their northern
Sydney home has publicly thanked friends and others for their concern.

Brenda Lin, 15, was on a overseas school study trip on July 18 when her family were
found bludgeoned to death at their Epping home.

Among those killed were newsagent Min Lin, 45, his wife Yun Li Lin, 43, and the couple's
sons Henry, 12 and Terry, nine.

Ms Lin's 39-year-old sister Irene Yin was also found murdered in the house.

Brenda, a student at Cheltenham Girls High School, has remained in hiding since returning
to Australia, but through a statement issued through the Lin family lawyer, Daniel Sheen,
said she appreciated the support she had received from concerned friends and others.

"When I logged onto Facebook today, I found many of my friends had left me comments,
showing their support for me and my family, she said late on Saturday.

"It showed that so many people were concerned about me and I felt really thankful to
all those people."

The Epping newsagency owned by the Lin's has been closed since their bodies were found,
but is expected to open this week.

Ms Lin also acknowledged people who had left flowers outside the newsagency.

"I felt the same feeling of thanks when I saw so many flowers and gifts left outside
the newsagent and our home," she said.

"I was moved by the overwhelming amount of flowers, I would have never imagined there
to be so many."

SA: New laws to forge environmental resolution

AAP General News (Australia)

SA: New laws to forge environmental resolution

By Larine Statham

ADELAIDE, Dec 30 AAP - South Australia will begin the New Year with a long awaited
environmental resolution - phasing out the use of plastic bags.

From January 1, South Australians will have to bring their own reusable bags every
time they go shopping.

Plastic bags will still be available until a complete ban is enforced on May 4 next
year, but as the bags are phased out all retailers will be required to provide alternatives
for shoppers to carry their goods.

South Australia is the first state in the country to introduce the ban.

Environment and conservation minister Jay Weatherill said 90 per cent of people supported
the ban.

"Most people have been bringing their own bags for more than a year," he said.

While some people view the "BYO bags" as an inconvenience, January 1 will mean a reduction
in other ongoing household hassles, such as the red tape associated with development and
planning approval.

South Australian home renovators, in most cases, in 2009 will no longer be required
to gain council approval for pergolas, sheds and shade sails.

On another domestic front, new legislation in South Australia will require teenagers
to "learn or earn" until the age of 17.

Education Minister Jane Lomax-Smith said research had shown that young people who learned
for longer were far more likely to find good jobs and earn more money.

"We want people to understand that doesn't mean full time schooling," she said.

"A student could be at TAFE, doing an apprenticeship or undertaking some other form of training.

"What this new law essentially means is that leaving school to do nothing is no longer
an option."

January 1 will also mark the start of tough regulations on the transportation of dangerous
goods to bring the requirements in line with nationally-agreed legislation.

The new rules set out the responsibilities of anyone transporting dangerous goods in
the areas of licensing, packaging, labelling, placarding, stowage, documentation, insurance
and emergency procedures.

To assist the industry to comply with the new road and rail transportation regulations
there will be a transition period of 12 months to December 31 2009.

NSW: Man jailed for nurse's murder maintains his innocence

SYDNEY, April 27 AAP - A man sentenced to 20 years' jail today for murdering a Sydney
nurse could be innocent, his lawyer has told the Supreme Court.

Earlier this year a jury found Madappa Kaliyanda guilty of murdering nurse Asha Khanna
in August 1997.

Her decomposed body, wrapped in plastic bags, was discovered in her unit at Liverpool,
in Sydney's southwest, more than two weeks after she was last seen alive.

The 50-year-old had been smothered or strangled, and more than $13,000 was drained
from her bank account before her body was discovered.

Justice Michael Grove sentenced Kaliyanda to a maximum 20 years behind bars, saying:
"In harmony with the verdict, I find that you were her killer."

However, he acknowledged that Kaliyanda disputed the guilty verdict, maintaining that
police had arrested the wrong person.

Moments after the sentence was delivered, Kaliyanda's lawyer Clive Jeffreys handed
the judge a draft notice of appeal against conviction, on the grounds of a "miscarriage
of justice".

"This is a matter where there is a real possibility that an innocent man has been found
guilty," Mr Jeffreys said.

He asked the judge for a certificate declaring that the case was fit for appeal, but
Justice Grove refused to grant one.

The judge said he had "made a conscious effort during the trial not to form an opinion
one way or the other" on Kaliyanda's guilt or innocence.

"That was the jury's function, not mine," Justice Grove said.

Kaliyanda must serve at least 14 years in prison and will be eligible for parole in 2021.

A series of fatal crashes on Queensland's roads during the Christmas period has seen
this year's annual road toll eclipse last year's.

Police say this year's state fatality count has climbed to 334 .. already surpassing
last year's overall total of 328.

But with four days still to go over the notoriously deadly Christmas-New Year period

Police say seven lives have already been lost on Queensland roads since the Christmas-New

and died in a Melbourne Park.

SUZANNE SEKULOVSKA was also accused of failing to call an ambulance.

But the 30-year-old has been cleared of charges of theft, attempted theft and reckless

SEKULOVSKA was accused of stealing 69-year-old ADOLPHOUS SUARES' wedding ring and $60,
and waving away good samaritans as he suffered a fatal heart attack.

The man died in Batman Park, next to the Yarra River, on February the 16th, 2004.
