Fed: Aged care contact points simplify communication
CANBERRA, Aug 25 AAP - One phone call will put the elderly in contact with a network
of community services under an initiative announced by the Commonwealth Government today.
Under the scheme, a 1800 number will link people with one of 54 Carelink centres set
up especially for the aged at church and civic organisations across the country.
The centres, run by organisations already working in their region, can then supply
information on a range of federal, state and local government community services.
Aged Care Minister Bronwyn Bishop said the initiative would cost $32.8 million over three years.
"The new centres will provide information on services available in the region, how
to contact them, eligibility criteria, and information relating to fees associated with
receiving services," she said in a statement.
"The use of a 1800 number as well as a shopfront will result in a nation-wide network
of centres offering a service focused on the individual and making access to services
simpler."
Organisations chosen to host the centres include Wesley Mission, Anglicare, the Pharmacy
Guild of Australia, the Uniting Church, Centrelink and several councils.
