Qld: Survey finds greater confidence in govt schools
BRISBANE, April 11 AAP - Confidence in Queensland's public education system is on the
rise, says a survey released today.
Education Minister Dean Wells said the 1999 survey indicated student satisfaction with
the public education system had risen by 12.5 per cent over the previous two years.
Much of this was because of an increased use of technology and most students were positive
about their schooling.
The survey of parents, teachers and students, was based only on those within the public
system, with no comparative opinion of those in private education.
"Generally, students believed their teachers' explanation of school work was well done,
their teachers took an interest in them and helped them do their best," Mr Wells said
in a statement.
Parental confidence in Queensland's public schools had also increased by 5.5 per cent
over the past two years, he said.
"On average 80 per cent of parents were satisfied or very satisfied with their children's
schooling and this points to strong support for what we are providing," Mr Wells said.
"Similarly parental satisfaction with student safety, discipline and behaviour proves
that we are creating the learning environment they want for their children."
Of the 45,000 staff who responded to the survey three quarters were satisfied with
their overall workplace.
"Staff generally believe their schools are safe, their relationships with peers and
students are positive and they are happy with the level of responsibility they are encouraged
to take," Mr Wells said.
