NT: Crean undecided on Greater Sunrise gas
By Rod McGuirk
DARWIN, Aug 12 AAP - Federal Opposition Leader Simon Crean remained unconvinced todaythat piping Timor Sea gas from the Greater Sunrise field to Darwin was the best option.
Mr Crean was meeting the Northern Territory Chief Minister Clare Martin today on issuesincluding Timor Sea gas.
The Labor chief minister has been lobbying Canberra to support the piping of GreaterSunrise gas to shore as a domestic energy source that would create billions of dollarsin downstream investments.
But despite the national interest arguments, developers Royal Dutch Shell and WoodsidePetroleum wants to build a floating liquefied natural gas plant at sea which would supplygas to overseas buyers.
Mr Crean said he was undecided on what would be the best option.
"We're having discussions whilst we're here in relation to that," Mr Crean said.
"The great pity is that that decision is being considered in a vacuum.
"What we should have is a national energy policy. We need to know what is in the nationalinterest.
"It's important to consider all the circumstances, but it would be much better to considerit in terms of a national energy policy."
