Fed: Democrats say govt wants to crack down on welfare groups
Australian Democrats Leader ANDREW BARTLETT says the choice of a right-wing think-tankto audit charities and welfare groups reveals the government wants to crack down on groupsit dislikes.
Senator BARTLETT says the Democrats are concerned at the plan for the Institute ofPublic Affairs to audit organisations to clarify the distinction between lobby groupsand charities.
Treasurer PETER COSTELLO has denied the government wants to silence charities by threateningto end tax concessions if they criticise government policy.
But Senator BARTLETT says the choice of the institute makes the government's intention obvious.
